Lumen

Instrumentation/Voicing:
unison chant, with 3-part canon

This flexible "one-pager" is a new take on an old form: it opens with a repeating chant, then overlays a 3-part round to "pass" the light from person to person. The Latin aphorism "Lumen accipe et imperti" (Receive the light and pass it on) is a popular motto for schools around the world, and with its small intervals that gradually expand to larger leaps and scales, it's a great teaching piece (minor solfège). Works beautifully for large groups (chant is possible for audience/congregation), and also for quartets. The score includes additional performance ideas (candles, choreography, etc).
