Table Grace

Canon for voices in 2-8 parts, a cappella

This 2-8 part canon is quite a flexible little number, appropriate for worship, thanksgiving, or just around the dinner table! Beginning choruses with an octave range can sing simply the first eight measures if desired ("Hunger of the world, when we ask a grace, be remembered here with us by Thy vacant place"). More advanced groups can move on to the last eight bars with its exciting leaps and long harmonic-minor descending scale. Written for an Empty Bowls-themed concert, this is a popular choice for charity concerts, especially those benefiting world hunger, clean water, and famine.

Hunger of the world,
When we ask a grace,
Be remembered here with us
By Thy vacant place.

Thirst with naught to drink,
Sorrow more than mine,
May God someday make you laugh
With water turned to wine.
